Hungarian Nationalism

After reading up on the history of Hungary, I stumbled across this quote. "The Hungarian nobility controlled the Parliament in Budapest. Out of 400 members of Parliament in 1913, only 18 were non-Magyar. Tensions were particularly strong between the Hungarians and the Croats."

This assignment was to identify wether or not the Hungarian government was romantic, liberal, or both. After reading this quote, it is clear to me that it was a romantic country. This is because the definition of Romantic Government is a government composed of people that come from a common background of ideals, religion, or anything that can separate them from other groups. As the quote demonstrates, the parliament was made Magyar councilors.

Italian Nationalism

After reading the UNIT 2 PDF that we were given on the rise of nationalism, I have been led to understand that the Italian state was started with Romantic ideals. In the essay it states that, "Political power was now in the hands of those Italians who had fought for unification under the banner of the House of Savoy" (National Independence 1). This shows us that the new government was led by people that had a common history, or mindset. This new government can be seen as a direct correlation to that which is Romantic Government. It is later stated that the government that the Italians set up was a constitutional monarchy, with a parliament, and a lower parliament, all appointed by the king. (National Independence 1) This definitely shows that this new government is not one of a liberal nature, for in a liberal government, the people choose who represents them.

Peasant Wedding, by Brueghel

This painting is very descriptive of pre modern life, and how people had to work together to get by.
This is demonstrated by the multiple demonstrations of people working together. The most prominent of this is the couple taking the tray of food to the table. One would think that they are of a lower class, seeing as they are serving food, but with a closer look, you can see that they are in fact helping out. This can be deduced because of the man who is sitting at the table, and passing the food around to other party goers.

My Expecations

History, for me, has always been lectures and study. Mostly boring, but I was good at it,
so i didnt complain. This year seems like a good one, just from the get go. Mr. Holton has changed the traditional boring class into a hands on class, where you teach yourself, and use modern tech instead of paper and pencil. This year seems amazing, and I cant wait to jump into it.
